According to a report in the Star-Ledger today, the federal government says New Jersey is afflicted with 134 “food deserts.” The term “food desert” means that there are pockets of people living in areas where the nearest supermarket — which offers less expensive fresh food — is more than one mile away. According to the government some 340,000 or four percent of the state’s population, suffer in these less than optimal conditions. “There’s food in these communities,” said Alan Berube, a senior fellow and research director of the Brookings Metropolitan Policy Program. “It’s just expensive food, or not particularly healthy food.” So these “poor” New Jerseyians
