I’m a Columbia undergraduate student looking for a room as close to Columbia University (Broadway and 116th St.) as possible, for at least this academic year (October-May). I’m sick of finding postings/people who are only interested in renting to me if I am celibate and sleep in the library on campus. I’m an excellent roommate but I’m not your grandmother. Let’s get some things straight.

I will drink. Not often and not a lot, and not in a way that results in loud noises/vomit/strange men crawling out the window next morning. I don’t smoke or use any drugs.
I will have men over. Not on the daily and not by droves–and if I get lucky, you won’t know about it, because we’ll keep it down.
I will live here. I spend a good deal of time on campus each day for classes, work, etc but what I’m paying for is a place to call home, and I don’t want to feel an Unwelcoming Death Stare if I spend lazy weekends in my room or spend time off at the apartment instead of Out.
I cook. I will always thoroughly clean up after myself when I cook, and you, my lucky future roomie, will be welcome to taste my creations, from fresh homemade pasta to rhubarb coffee cake. (I’m a *good* cook.)
I don’t have pets. I also love animals and have no allergies, so if you do, that’s fine.
I’m a woman. But I don’t care if you are. I often get along even better with men than women, and am open to either as roommates.

And perhaps most importantly…

I’LL PAY! And punctually. I have financial aid money that is specifically designated to pay for housing (rent) that I will be happy to use to pay you, dear future roomie, reliably and on time.

Now that we’ve covered the nitty-gritty, let’s talk about the less critical but equally important reasons that you want me as a roommate. I speak some Italian and French, and if you do too I’d be more than happy to practice with you. I’m also an archaeology student, so if you like talking about skeletal morphology and geeking out over news in human evolution, I’m your girl. And if you don’t, I’m a relatively quiet person, and won’t talk your ear off. I’m not chatty, I’m not a gossip, and I definitely understand the need for mutual respect of personal space.

So what are you waiting for? I look forward to your email, and hopefully, your smiling face every day for the next 7 months.
